宋襄公见齐国发生内乱，就通知各国诸侯，请他们共同护送公子昭到齐国去接替君位。但是宋襄公的号召力不大，多数诸侯把宋国的通知搁在一边，只有三个小柄带了点人马前来。
宋襄公率领四国的兵马打到齐国去。齐国一批大臣一见四国人马打来，就投降了宋国，迎接公子昭即位。这就是齐孝公。
齐国本来是诸侯的盟主国，如今齐孝公靠宋国内部帮助得了君位，宋国内部的地位就自然提高了。
송襄 公雄心勃勃，想继承齊桓 公的霸主事业。这次他约会诸侯，只有三个小柄听从他的命令，几个中原大國没理他。Song Cuxing think that if he could get the cooperation of Chu, then all the countries under Chu's influence would naturally be submissive to him.
He told his ministers about this plan, but Minister Gao Zhiji did not agree with it. He thought that Song was a small country and wanted to be the leader, which would not bring any benefits. Song Cuxing refused to listen to him and invited Chu King and Duke Xiao of Qi to meet in Song first, discussing how to unite the various states by making an alliance.
In July of that year (605 BCE), Song Cuxing drove his chariot to attend the meeting. Minister Gao Zhiji said, "What if Chu King does not have good intentions? What should we do?"
Song Cuxing replied, "That won't work; we're here for peace talks so as not bring war upon ourselves again."
Minister Gao Zhiji couldn't convince him so he had no choice but go without bringing any guards along.
Sure enough at the meeting, both Chu King and Song Cuxing wanted to lead their respective alliances as leaders leading into conflicts between them. The power of Chu was strong with many vassal states dependent on it while Song's authority was weak. In a flash when they started arguing over who should lead their alliance first came out from behind wearing armor ready for battle taking away Sonhujun - catching him off guard in public like this caused much embarrassment for sonhujun who has been trying hard all day long since morning till now! So after some time passed by because things didn't go smoothly during negotiations due mainly because there were differences between people wanting more power than others having less even though everyone agreed initially before disagreements began happening; these disagreements made quite clear what kind might happen later down line possibly including further wars or bloodshed too...
